Verona is a very special city to me. I visited it 4 times and I spent more than a month there, learning Italian in a local school and I found it almost perfect. Right sized, walkable, and super varied. Roman, medieval, renaissance and modern buildings sometimes build one over the other.
I know it's not a hidden gem by any means, but it's sometimes overlooked by first time travelers to Italy, and many tourists just do a day tour, never going outside Citta Antica. It's a mistake. St. Zeno cathedral or Giardini Giusti are must see in my opinion.
