We spent three months traveling around Southeast Asia and moved around a lot more than we originally expected.
We started in Kuala Lumpur, where we celebrated New Year’s. After that we flew to Kuching on Borneo. The coolest thing there was finding a Rafflesia in bloom in the forest outside the city. It was huge and honestly looked more like an alien than a flower.
Next was Brunei. We walked around Kampong Ayer, the village on stilts, and took a boat along the rivers nearby. We saw proboscis monkeys in the trees and several crocodiles in the water. Seeing crocodiles that close to people’s houses felt a little strange.
Singapore was three days of almost nonstop rain. We got soaked, dried off and got soaked again. Still, the city looked amazing, especially Gardens by the Bay at night.
From there we went to Ho Chi Minh City and then Da Nang, where we finally stopped moving for a while. We stayed for a month, went to Hoi An and Ba Na Hills, and had something close to a normal routine again.
Then came Bangkok, Cambodia and Angkor, followed by Luang Prabang in Laos. After Laos we returned to Vietnam: first Hanoi, then a week in Sapa. It was foggy and some days we could barely see anything past the next tree, but the fog made the mountains and forests look great.
For the last couple of weeks we went back to Da Nang. By that point we were done with airports and sightseeing, so we mostly rested and swam in the sea.
