South or Central America - struggling with altitude

I’m currently in Ecuador around 5 weeks into a 14 week backpacking trip. My initial plan was to go from Colombia down to Bolivia then finish in Brazil.

However I am in Quito at the moment, have been here for a week and have hiked in the Cotopaxi region and Quilatoa. I am REALLY struggling with altitude despite taking tablets etc and it’s making me struggle on hikes and therefore not enjoy them. I’m not the fittest and already was concerned how I would manage with the hikes.

Obviously my next 2 countries are even higher so I’m considering flying up to Central America and spending the rest of my trip backpacking from Panama to Mexico.

My question is, to anyone who has backpacked both, do you think I will feel I have missed out and not made the most of my trip?

I’ll be missing out on iconic sites such as Machu Picchu, Iguazu and Rio but is Central America just as exciting?
