Solo travel in Australia - feeling deflated

I’ve been solo travelling Australia for around three months now and feeling super lonely.

I went up the east coast and didn’t really mesh with anyone due to me being 8/9/10 years older than most. Didn’t meet anyone who is continuing their travels in Aus, everyone went home or elsewhere.

Even when I put in effort to try and meet people/exchange numbers they don’t take me up on plans.

Feel super sad seeing loads of young people hanging around in groups here and feel like I’m not having the classic backpacker experience everyone raves about despite staying in hostels? Is it me? Is it all just luck? Romanticised ideas that you will meet friends for life?

I generally like my own company and at home will go to the cinema, coffee, lunch solo but getting fed up in my own head here
