I visited Yangon a few months ago and it instantly became one of the most unique places I’ve ever been to. As a traveler from Europe I got a lot of attention, but in a very warm and positive way. While walking around the Shwedagon Pagoda two girls came up to me and asked if they could take a photo with me. It was such a fun and unexpected moment.
Yangon felt incredibly authentic. The streets, the atmosphere, the people, the food. It was nothing like the typical tourist destinations in Southeast Asia, and that made the whole experience even better. It is also a great destination for anyone traveling on a budget.
I did have some problems with ATMs though. A few machines didn’t work for my card and one of them actually swallowed it. Even that felt more like an adventure than a disaster once it was over.
Despite the small challenges I absolutely loved my time there, and I really want to go back. Next time I want to see Bagan. It has been on my mind ever since I left.
