Malarone in Infants. Looking for experience

My SIL is getting married in Togo in April and my daughter will be 9 months old at the time. If we go, we would be traveling from the US to Togo for about 5 days (myself, my husband, and our 9 month old).

If we go, we would all have to be on anti malaria medication, presumably malarone, but I'm having a very hard time finding stories from folks about their experience with side effects of Malarone in babies. I know it can cause gastrointestinal issues, but how common is that? Does anyone know if you can try the medication somewhat in advance to see what your reaction will be?

If the general concensus is that youre more likely than not to get very sick from the Malarone we will probably opt not to go (or send one of us while the other stays home with baby).

Has anyone had their baby take anti malaria meds and if so, how did they do?

I know its technically an option to not take the meds and just try to avoid mosquitos but that feels too risky to us. So the options are 1) go and take our chances on medication side effects for ourselves and baby or 2) not all go.
