Jordan - 10 days in the jewel of the Middle East

Self-driving Jordan while tourism is low (October 2025) was one of my favorite trips in the last years.

We started in Madaba (Pic #1), best known for ancient mosaics dotted around the city. We found to city to be a great introduction to Jordanian culture, as we enjoyed history, delicious food, and local hospitality.

Dana Biosphere Reserve (Pic #2) felt like walking through the garden of Eden, with palm trees and shrubery sprawling out of tall sandstone cliffs. A fantastic stop on the King's Highway (Pic #3) on the way to Petra.

The natural highlight of our trip was the world wonder of Petra. And WOW, Petra really does not disappoint. From seeing the first morning rays shine onto the Treasury when walking through Al-Siq the first time (Pic #4) and strolling past the Street Of Facades (Pic #5) with camels and donkeys on the way (Pic #6), to reach the spectacular Monastery (Pic #7) after a short but grueling hike, ascending 800 stone steps. Rather overrated and quite exensive for such a short experience in our opinion: Petra by night (Pic #8).

Wadi Rum (Pics #9-11) was our next stop. I recommend staying in a Martian tent to best enjoy the red sand scenery. Although I did not sleep much, as I gazed at the blanket of stars all night.

Like the King's Highway, the Dead Sea Highway (Pics #12-13) also brings stunning scenery. There are some spots at the road side, where you can go down to the shore of the Dead Sea (much cooler and less crowded than staying in a resort). Make sure you have no open cuts before entering the water, as the high salt content will be very painful otherwise.

Rounding of the trip: two days in Amman (Pics #14-17) with a half-day trip to Jerash (Pic #18). I can recommend both cities and am still dreaming about Mansaf (Pic #16), the Jordanian national dish with the most delicious lamb you will taste anywhere.
