Hi, so I’m meant to be flying to Sardinia in less than two weeks. My friend called me crying yesterday, telling me she’s had a psychotic break and that she’ll be going back to Portugal to voluntarily admit herself into a mental health unit. She told me she won’t be able to come on the trip.
Obviously, I was devastated about this as we’ve been planning it for nearly a year and it’s only two weeks away, but I wanted her to focus on getting better rather than feeling guilty about disappointing me.
However… the situation is a bit complicated in the sense that I have travel insurance and can claim back my half of the trip, whereas she doesn’t. We’ve also passed the cancellation window for our hotels. I was considering going alone, but as an avid budgeter, I didn’t budget an extra £800 on top of what I’d already paid for my half. This £800 includes the car rental and the hotels we booked.
I paid for everything through PayPal and have until November to pay it off (stupid, I know 🥲). I’ve already covered my half and was waiting for her to send me hers, but now this has happened.
The situation is basically lose-lose because that £800 still needs to be covered even if we cancel the entire trip. So I thought I might as well just go, but am I a bad person for still asking her to cover her half?
Am I a bad person for even being worried about this when she’s clearly going through hell mentally?
And when would be the best time to discuss it with her?
Lesson learnt: make sure people pay you right away instead of dragging it out 🙃
