I’m wondering whether any TSA/airport security agent could help explain this. Since I started flying, I’ve been selected for additional screening on roughly 90% of the flights I’ve taken and I honestly don’t understand why. This has happened both when traveling alone and when traveling with others. I’m in my 20s, female, caucasian, from an EU country, with no criminal record and nothing that should raise any red flags. I don’t carry prohibited items (obviously) or anything unusual. I’m genuinely curious about why this keeps happening. Most of the time it’s okay, but there have been instances where the screening felt unusually thorough, as if they were specifically looking for something. The only possible explanation I’ve thought of is my surname, which is among the top ten most common in my country and there might be criminals with the same surname. However, that wouldn’t fully make sense, as it would imply that everyone with that surname would need to be screened in the same way.
