Hi all,
I spent 2 weeks in Egypt, travelling through the country, here's everything you may need to know, if you are heading there:
Itinerary:
Day1: Landed in Cairo, booked an airbnb in downtown (suggest booking any hotel / airbnb near El- Tahrir Square, this is the hub https://share.google/WKgAvTFiXFtQDPR1C)
Day2: The Great Pyramids. No booking, took a Uber and reached the Pyramid entrance in 45mins. Spent 6 hrs (I could have spent much more time there though, its marvellous). Egyptian Museum, walking distance from El- Tahrir Square. Try cafe (La Poire https://maps.app.goo.gl/KEJmkB6qU3KRYptF7 / Oldish https://maps.app.goo.gl/1gCsZ6ut2Pmji6eu5) you will not be disaapointed.
Day3: Had prebooked an early monring flight to Aswan. 5am takeoff-6am landing. Booked hotel nearby Nile (Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/z1FTEHDZ9i2ajcf67). Took a sail boat for Nubian village for breakfast and pics, then Trekked to Tombs of the Nobles (https://maps.app.goo.gl/tAvp3K2j83VjiCXx5), finally boat again for Sunset
Day4: Pre-booked locally an early morning group ride to Abu Simbel. Pickup 4.30am, arrival 8.30am. We were given 2hrs to checkout the place, which was enough, boarded the cab again at 10.30am, were back in Aswan by 2.30pm. Spent rest of the day on Boat, they call it Felucca
Day5: Spend night in the sailboat, swimming is nile, then got dropped off to a taxi stand. The boat owner helped book a taxi to Luxor, its a 4hrs ride. On the way, visited Kom Ombo Temple (https://maps.app.goo.gl/or5XJiJEP9obbUAy6) and Edfu Temple (https://maps.app.goo.gl/a5RNJpyaKUxA4vtF8), both are on the way, hadrly any detour. Reached Luxor around 6pm, spent rest of the day walking around
Day 6: They pitched me a hot air balloon ride, which is respectfully declined. Pre-booked locally group share ride to explore Luxor. Got picked 8am, visited the Valley of Kings, Valley of Queens, Karnak temple, Colossi of Memnon and the trip ended at 5pm at Luxor Temple. Lunch at Bondok Resturant (https://maps.app.goo.gl/u7KV7jVw1nb1r4Cg6). Took a late night premium bus to Cairo (booked online - G Bus)
Day 7: Reached Cairo early morning, spent the day roaming around. Visited Khan Al Khalili (souvenir markey https://maps.app.goo.gl/nGbv7g2kkacFWpvD9)
Day 8: Prebooked a taxi to Alexnadria. Pickup 8am from Cairo Downtown, 2-3hrs drive. Visited Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (can be missed as well though), Pompey's Pillar, Library and Citadel of Qaitbay, returned 4pm, reached Cairo 7pm
Day 9: Went back to some cafes i loved in Cairo. Did some souvenir shopping (try Nefertari, they make custom beauty products from natural ingredients - https://maps.app.goo.gl/KCMenZKjzXazRov6A)
Day10: Time to packup and leave
Recommendations:
WATER: Easy to find 500ml and 1ltr bottles, carry them and drink well
Currency: Cash (EGP) works everywhere. Most mechants accept cards, even for small amounts. Easy to convert USD if you are in downtown. I was carrying USD and would convert as and when required. I was also carrying a Thomas Cook card and it worked like a charm.
Safety: No thieves, no pickpockets. Everyone will try to sell you something, you can respectfully pass by saying "LA SHUKRAN", means no thank you. If you show any signs of interest, then they might pester you, still not touching or forcing.
Phone: I picked up local sim from the airport, 15 days for 800EGP, worked very well, no complaints. Almost all use whatsapp, easier to communicate
Coordination: Try to make a friend (preferably at your first place of stay), he will then help you find a stay and book activities for next location, so on a so forth, it worked well for me
Language: 2/10 spoke english, but almost everyone is educated and can read write Arabic. I used the Google translator and was quite handy everywhere
Food: If you are choosy, you have KFC, McDonalds well spreadout. Lots of fruits and bakery available, which you can pack and carry. I always carried few protein bars as a backup, used it once or twice as well.
Hope you find this useful. Wishing you good luck
