Avignon became one of the places I wanted to visit wehn I randomly learnt about the Western Schism and the period when the city hosted a contender to the papacy against Rome. May years passed by until we were roadtrpping around the south of France and the chance came to make a stop-over in Avignon on the return from the Fronch Alps to Nimes for a flight the day after.
I really enjoyed the vibe of the city: very compact and organized, lively, full of commerce, music, people, events. It was also the only city I was able to fly the drone close to in France due to a small section of the river front not being included in the no fly zone maps, and I took a chance - glad I did!
