8 day trip to New Zealand without car - Feb 2026
I had an amazing trip to New Zealand. Sharing my itinerary for anyone planning. My tour was mainly focused around Queenstown but its so cool that you can do everything from there and not have to pack and move hotels every 2 days. So I saved a lot of time in commute. I did not rent a car!!
Day 1: Land in Auckland airport. Immigration plus hotel check in. I stayed at Auckland Airport Easy hotel. They have pickup from Airport. Took a hot shower and mini nap after a long flight from Seattle (via Los Angeles). After a quick lunch, went to
- Auckland Memorial Museum - The museum was okayish. I realize its a war memorial museum so there was greater emphasis on that compared to Maori culture and history before westerners arrived. The maori show was okay but not great. The flower garden nearby was very nice.
- Auckland Aquarium - This was so much fun. I loved the penguin display, jelly fish and big tunnel with sharks and rays. Kids would totally love it. It was totally worth the price
- Auckland sky tower - This is like any sky tower. You get the view of skyline from the top deck but that's about it. I guess you can skip but I had time to kill so just went.
Day 2: Fly out to Queenstown and hotel checkin. It was pretty cloudy that day. My original plan was to do the gondola but I postponed it as its very cloudy. Things I did:
- Ferg burger - Since I am vegetarian I tried their tofu burger. It was pretty good with some unique flavors.
- Time tripper - This is a small show near the pier. I was hoping to be a 4D show but it was more of a mini theater with seats that simply vibrate. The animated history of Lake Wakatipu was nice. They feed the fishes after the show so its nice to see lots of eels and ducks come for that. Its overall okay.
- Kiwi Conservative - This is a big park with loose gravel. Better to come in hiking boots rather than shoes or heels. I was hoping for big areas earmarked for different birds with numerous birds in each enclosure but it was small areas with just 1-2 of each bird. I guess its good for the birds. They have some nice double cage systems so that you can see the birds up close without any glass. The kiwi section was a bummer for me. It was totally dark and no photography is allowed. After a lot of focussing I could see a kiwi's silhouette. But thats about it. It is pretty expensive at about 60 NZD and I dont think it is worth it.
Day 3: This was an epic day!
- Milford Sound - I started pretty early at 7 for Milford sound fly cruise fly with True south flights. The weather was perfect with sun and low clouds which made the entire journey very scenic. I enjoyed the flight more than the cruise I feel. The operator is great with pickup and drop to my hotel. I liked that all the seats in the plane were window seats.
- Shotover jet - This was so cool not only for the jet ride and the spins but also for the views. The jade color of Kawarau river is so pretty and the fast flowing nature makes it more beautiful. The jet itself goes into a canyon so it gives more of an adventure feel as scenary keeps unfolding (instead of you being able to see far out). This was so worth it!
- Skyline godola and Luge - I got gondola and 5 luge rides for 95 NZD. The gondola is like any gondola. You get to see full view of Wakatipu from top which was nice. But the better views were from luge area. You had to climb a bit for that (10 min incline walk) but you get better views of the lake without the gondola cables interfering. Luge is so much fun. They have two tracks and skilifts to help you get back to the top. I got the 5 ride pass but wish I got the 6 ride one as its only $ 3 more.
Day 4: Lake Tekapo tour. I got a private tour to Lake Tekapo with Travelngo. The tour operator is very nice and the price is pretty good for a private tour. It was around 1000 NZD but if you are 2-3 people any group tour would cost about the same but I got to spend more time at the lakes.
- Lindis pass - This place is very nice and has an alien vibe to it. The tufted grass gives the whole mountains here a pox look.
- Lake Pukaki - Very beautiful and huge lake with Mt Aoraki in background. Seems the salmon shop is good.
- Lake Tekapo - Absolutely stunning lake with bright blue water. The church there makes it more scenic. We had lunch under a nearby tree and it was so scenic.
- Omaram clay cliffs - This is pretty cool too. There is a small hike and they look like giant ant mounds with some patterns.
I was lucky to get a sunny day so could see the bright blues of the lakes. Though Feb is summer this year it has been pretty cloudy.
Day 5: Te anau glowworm caves. I booked the glowworm tour with real NZ. For commute I booked buses from Tracknet. Leave Queenstown to Te anau at 10 AM, Glowworm tours at 2 PM, Return bus at 4:45 PM. Reached Queenstown at around 7:30 PM.
- The glowworm tour was pretty cool with a ferry to the island, a walk along the caves with the falls and then the pitch black boat tour. The boat tour itself was only around 15 mins and was nice to see clusters of the glow worms. Sadly no photos allowed. The glowworms were like clusters of tiny blue dots in a black background. It was pretty magical.
- I feel I lost the whole day in this as I was doing back and forth from Queenstown. Perhaps if you stay at Te anau you can do Milford/Doubtful sound and glowworms in one day. There is takahe conservatory nearby which I wanted to go. But I didnt have car and there was no uber in this area and I didnt have enough time to walk. So skipped it :(
Day 6: Was a bit tired here. Should have been a rest day well cant waste a vacation day :P
- Dart river jet tour. The idea was to visit Glenorchy and club it with some activity. The road to Glenorchy is very beautiful as it goes along Lake Wakatipu. When its sunny Wakatipu has a brilliant jewel like green color. Sit on the left side of the bus (while facing the driver) to get the best views. I wish they stopped at some points for photos but they went straight to the jet activity. This jet tour was okay and not as good as shotover jet. If you do shotover you can skip this.
- Fiordland finest helicopter tour. This was an expensive ride and I had great expectations from it but was little bummed. The tour itself was more of a photo stop kind of tour. Instead of Lake Erskine we went to Lake Quill. It was pretty average looking lake. Then we stopped on a glacier for few minutes and then Ernslaw burn. It was very sunny and my photos of Ernslaw didnt look good. Ernslaw burn also looked pretty okay and not as amazing as the photos and videos we see. Overall I felt this was a waste of time and money.
Day 7: Bungy jumping with AJ Hackett! This was another epic day and a great end for a great tour. I did the Kawarau bungy and swing and also the Nevis bungy and swing (I am crazy!!) I emailed them for a discount and they gave me all 4 for 1000 NZD. If you are short on budget you can skip the Kawarau bits.
- Kawarau swing - This is very cool to start. Seeing the jade Kawarau river is so beautiful and the sudden drop and swing is such an amazing feeling. Strongly recommend it
- Kawarau bungy - This had too much wait time as they use some towel and straps to tie to your feet and also use a boat to get you to land. After all the wait time the bungy itself lasts very short time 3-4 seconds as the bridge height is small. It was over before even I could process whats happening. But the videos look amazing. Bungy with the river backdrop is very cool. So if you want a great video definitely do this.
- Nevis bungy - Things were very well organized here and wait times were much lower than Kawarau. Seeing the floating station itself gives you stomach churns. The drop is much higher than Kawarau. I was shit scared to do this but the feeling was EPIC. The freefall is almost 9 seconds and you feel so weightless and amazing. Somehow I felt this is even better than sky diving. The pullback also is scenic as you get to sit and see the river below. If you love thrills this is a must do.
- Nevis swing - This is the worlds deepest canyon swing or something. It was pretty cool too. The drop is much more than the Kawarau swing.
The videos and photos they gave were very good with multiple angles and viewpoints. I dont think we can record like that. So dont waste time recording anything. They do a pretty solid job. I was smiling for the next 2 days :D Same evening I flew out to Auckland.
Day 8: After a good nights sleep I flew out of Auckland to Lax and then to Seattle.
I didnt cover much of North Island or areas outside Queenstown. Since I didnt have a car these areas would have added lot more time and drag. But I feel I got to see the best of New Zealand.
Its amazing that one country can have the colorful lakes of Banff, fjords of Norway, geology of Iceland, thrill activities from worldover and some unique elements like glowworms. I feel every day of my trip could have well been a 3-4 day trip in some other country. There are so many things to do all packed close by!! The Aussies are very lucky they can tour New Zealand easily!!!
