Just got back from travelling around the south west of France for 10 days. Started in Montpellier which is a really nice city which has lots of tapas which is influenced by its somewhat close proximity to the Spanish border. Foodwise they also have fish and chips everywhere which as a Brit I had to try and compare for science. Some places seem to put curry sauce under the batter coat which is a really tasty combination.
I got the tram to the free zoo in Montpellier which was a nice way to spend a morning before getting the tram to the nearby Carnon beach which was really busy with people sailing their boats, playing volleyball.
The centre of Montpellier is very walkable and ended up meeting quite a few cool people who I met up with over the course of a few nights for drinks.
I did a day trip to Sete on the Monday which was Easter Monday and the trains and the city were both ram packed with people. The canals and boats are gorgeous to admire. It was a bit overwhelming so I headed out of the centre and walked along the coast and discovered some coves with really nice quiet beaches. The weather was beautiful so I wish I had brought some swimming gear with me.
The next day I did a day trip to Nimes and saw the Roman Amphitheatre and the canals. Beautiful city.
After a few more days in Montpellier I headed to Toulouse, after throwing my bag in to my accommodation and grabbing a baguette, I bumped in to some other fellow solo travellers who I ended up playing cards with whilst sitting in the sun at pont neuf. We got drinks from the nearby Carrefour and a 5 euro pizza from a nearby takeaway and made the most of the evening sat by the Riverside.
It was very wholesome trip and I met some great people. I would definitely recommend any of these cities for either a short weekend trip or like I did as part of a 10 day multi city trip.
